The House System at Babington House: Building Character and Community

At Babington House, we believe education is about more than academics—it’s about nurturing confident, compassionate young people. That’s why every student becomes part of one of our four Houses: Nightingale, Curie, Cavell, and Fry, each named after an extraordinary woman who changed the world.

  • Nightingale – Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing and a pioneer of social reform.
  • Curie – Marie Curie, the courageous scientist whose discoveries transformed cancer treatment.
  • Cavell – Edith Cavell, remembered for her courage and humanity during the First World War.
  • Fry – Elizabeth Fry, a passionate advocate for prison reform and social justice.

Being part of a House is about teamwork, achievement, and character. Students earn House Points by demonstrating our core values—Kindness, Courtesy, Determination, Honesty, and Respect—as well as through academic success and participation in school life.

What makes it special?

Exciting Inter-House competitions, including Sports Day and half-termly challenges, offer students opportunities to win up to 100 House Points for their House. These points contribute to individual rewards, House prizes, and ultimately, the prestigious House Cup awarded at the end of the year.

Leadership opportunities arise in Year 10, when students can apply to become House Captains or Deputy Captains for the following year, taking on responsibilities such as leading assemblies, organising events, and supporting charity initiatives. These roles help develop confidence, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility—qualities that last a lifetime.

To celebrate exceptional effort, students with the highest House Points are invited to a special Afternoon Tea with Heads of Houses, Senior Leadership, and staff — a memorable reward for their hard work and commitment.

At Babington House, the House system isn’t just tradition—it’s a vibrant part of school life that nurtures character, leadership, and community spirit.
