Founded in 1887, Babington House School has a rich history of nurturing young talent. The founder of the school, Madame Rossel, who was a distinguished Belgian educationalist, had a keen interest in fostering the arts for ‘young ladies and small boys.’ Now, 138 years later, we are proud to be building on those traditions by launching a brand-new scholar programme to develop the talents of our younger children.
The Rossel Scholar Programme aims to further enhance the offer for our children and prepare those selected for a potential scholarship to our outstanding senior school.
The programme has been designed to reflect our school traditions and further enhance our outstanding academic offer to our pupils. It also aims to develop our Senior School Scholars from a young age on a clear pathway, just as Madame Rossel dreamt of all those years ago.
About our Scholar Programme
The programme has been designed to extend the all-round academic ability of those children selected. We are looking to develop well-rounded scholars who not only achieve high academic standards but also reflect our school values of Kindness, Courtesy, Determination, Honesty and Respect. The programme will involve some of, if not all, of the following activities:
· Additional sessions with specialist teachers from both Prep and Senior School.
· A one-to-one mentor from the staff team.
· The opportunity to represent the school in academic competitions.
· Additional home learning.
· Preparation for Senior School Scholarship selection activities.
The selection process
All Year 2 children attending Babington House, or those committed to joining the school at the beginning of Year 3 will be automatically considered for the programme.
The selection panel will look at the all-round academic ability of the children, as well as how they reflect the school values and contribute to the school community. Those children who consistently attain above age-related expectations are most likely to be selected for the programme.
Whilst there is no fixed number, the panel expects around 4-5 children to be selected each year.
Children will be identified during the Summer Term of Year 2 with invitations sent out in July 2025.
The children involved in the programme will be reviewed on an annual basis, with any necessary changes being made ahead of each September. This may result in new children being added to the programme on an annual basis. Children selected will be encouraged to apply for scholarships to the Senior School, where appropriate.
